Department of Anesthesiology welcomes 12 new residents

Shelby Schelkopf will continue her residency close to home.

On Match Day, the Geneva, Nebraska, native was one of eight UNMC medical students who learned they had matched to the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology.

“I’m thrilled to stay at UNMC because of the people in the department and the robust training that residents receive,” Schelkopf said, adding: “I could not dream up a better group of people to guide me through my next four years of training.”

On March 15, Schelkopf and her 139 classmates opened their Match Day envelopes to learn their residency assignments during a ceremony at the Scott Conference Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Accompanied by his wife, brother and parents, medical student Nathaniel Pester of Fremont, Nebraska, was excited to announce his residency match at UNMC. “One of my proudest moments was presenting my research project at the American Society for Anesthesiologists last year,” Pester said.

Maria Tessin of Omaha also will continue her training at UNMC, citing the supportive environment and amazing people as reasons she wanted to stay.

Residency program director Andrea Dutoit, MD, said she is excited for the diverse skillset and experiences this class will bring to the UNMC anesthesiology family.

“We are fortunate in the field of anesthesiology right now to have an incredible pool of talented, hard-working and bright medical students going into our field,” Dr. Dutoit said. “We are thankful to be able to be a part of their training and thrilled that they have chosen to join us at UNMC!”

Mohanad Shukry, MD, PhD, interim chair of the department, welcomes each of the new residents to the program. “Anesthesiology residency is very competitive right now,” Dr. Shukry said. “My gratitude goes to Dr. Dutoit and our education team for another successful year.”

Meanwhile, Schelkopf is eager to join eight classmates and four other residents on July 1, noting the training opportunities and experiences available at UNMC, plus the friendly and supportive department faculty, created the perfect match.
