Sauer receives Rosalind Franklin Society award

Lauren Sauer

UNMC’s Lauren Sauer, an associate professor in the UNMC College of Public Health and the associate director for research of the UNMC Global Center for Health Security, has been named a recipient of the Rosalind Franklin Society Special Award in Science.

The 2023 award recognizes contributions to advancing scientific knowledge, honoring outstanding peer-reviewed research from by women and minorities in science.

Sauer was recognized for her published research, “Information Challenges Associated with Accessing and Sharing of Patient Information in Disasters: A Qualitative Analysis.” She was lead author for the article published in the journal Health Security in November 2023.

Sauer, an expert in disaster preparedness and response, said the work was inspired by the countless disaster responses where she has been involved, including Hurricane Katrina, California wildfires, earthquakes and floods. Every time, she said, she experiences different ways of sharing information – some good, some bad – and it proves difficult to build a system around such highly variable plans and procedures.

“Information is absolutely essential to saving lives in emergencies – it is the currency of disaster response,” Sauer said. “The findings from this paper show that improving information sharing will protect both patients and, importantly, our exceptionally burdened health care workforce.”

Sauer also is the director of the Special Pathogen Research Network through the National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center and sits on the Red Cross Scientific Advisory Committee disaster sub-council.

The journal article is available at this link. The award publication, released on July 25 and available on the home page of the Rosalind Franklin Society, highlights her work on pages 58 and 59.

The Rosalind Franklin Society was established in 2007 by Mary Ann Liebert, founder and chairman of Mary Ann Liebert Inc., an independent publisher of scientific, technical and medical content.
