A conceptual rendering of how 42nd Street will look following construction, looking west toward Wittson Hall.

Pedestrians and drivers traveling along 42nd Street on the Omaha campus should be aware that:

Another conceptual rendering of how 42nd Street will look following construction, this one looking east toward Williams Science Hall and the Sorrell Center.
  • Emile Street to Dewey Avenue is closed until May 2026 for utilities, streetscape and pedestrian safety projects. The project, in part, will remove the island at the pedestrian crosswalk at 42nd Street near the entrance to Wittson Hall to create a shorter crossing distance and eliminate the line-of-sight issues caused by drop-offs at this location. It also will install a raised pedestrian platform to increase visibility and narrow traffic lanes to help slow traffic through the area.
    • Sidewalks will be widened to increase pedestrian safety. During the project, the sidewalk west of 42nd Street will close; the east sidewalk will remain open.
  • Starting Thursday, July 10, street-level access to and from Wittson Hall’s main east entrance will be closed until May 2026. Fencing soon will be put in place to fully close the building’s street-level access. Access across 42nd Street will be via the:
    • Skywalk between the Sorrell Center and Wittson Hall
    • Crosswalk at Dewey and Emile streets
    • Utility tunnel for individuals who have access
  • The main (east facing) door of Poynter Hall will close from Aug. 18 to Sept. 16.
    • An alternate route will be in place for patients and employees during this time.
  • 42nd Street between Leavenworth and Emile Streets is head-to-head traffic until the end of August for an MUD water main relining project.
  • Minor street and curb work will take place mid-July through September along Emile Street from 42nd Street to Saddle Creek Road. Access to Emile Street will remain open during this time.
