Mary Manners, an instructor in UNMC Family Medicine from 1977 until her retirement in 2012, died June 8. She was 76. Colleagues say Manners was dedicated to experiential learning and student well-being and recalled her ready smile.
“Mary was one of our faculty educators when I was a resident,” said Jeff Harrison, MD, chair of UNMC’s Department of Family Medicine. “She was dedicated to improving patient-centered care by making students and residents better communicators. She was innovative and committed to making UNMC a leader in medical education.”
Manners moved away from residency education in the early 90s, Dr. Harrison said, to a student-focused role and was instrumental in developing UNMC’s long-standing Integrated Clinical Experience, of which many elements still are used today.
A Kentucky native, Manners earned a Master of Public Health from the University of Missouri.
Funeral services and a celebration of life will be announced later.
