Dr. Bennett named to new leadership role

Greg Bennett, DMD

Greg Bennett, DMD, has been appointed interim executive associate dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry.

The appointment was effective Aug. 1. Dr. Bennett replaces Amir Farhangpour, DDS, in the role.

“In his time as chair of the department of adult restorative dentistry, Dr. Bennett has led the department with vision, collaboration and a commitment to clinical and educational excellence,” said Gerard Kugel, DMD, PhD, dean of the college. “Under his leadership, the department has expanded its focus on digital dentistry, curricular innovation, and access to care.

“In addition to guiding the college’s digital dentistry initiative, Dr. Bennett has helped to launch impactful programs that align with our mission of service,” Dr. Kugel said. “He co-created the VetSmile program providing comprehensive, donor-supported dental care at no cost to Nebraska veterans.

“We look forward to working with Dr. Bennett as he transitions into this key leadership role.”

Dr. Bennett began his teaching career at the college in 2016, after serving as a dental corps officer in the United States Navy, later joining the full-time faculty in 2019. He is a graduate of the Oregon Health and Sciences University School of Dentistry and completed a general practice residency at NavalHospital Camp Pendleton. He also is currently completing his PhD as part of the Clinical andTranslational Research Mentored Scholars Program, with research focused on 3D printed prosthetics with antimicrobial effects.

Dr. Kugel also named Richard Bokemper. DDS, as interim chair of adult restorative dentistry, and Jenna Hubacz, DMD, as vice chair of the department.

“Dr. Bokemper’s longstanding commitment to education, mentorship, and patient care makes him well suited to guide the department through this period of transition,” Dr. Kugel said. “Dr. Hubacz, who joined the UNMC College of Dentistry in 2024, brings advanced clinical expertise and a passion for interdisciplinary education to her new leadership role.”

Dr. Kugel thanked Dr. Farhangpour for his long service to the college and the state of Nebraska.

“Throughout Dr. Farhangpour’s tenure, he has demonstrated a deep passion for advancing dental education and an unwavering commitment to the success of our students, faculty, and staff,” Dr. Kugel said. “His leadership has strengthened our academic programs, fostered interdisciplinary collaboration, and upheld the highest standards of patient care.

“We are grateful for his many contributions and wish him continued success in his new endeavor.”

He and Dr. Bennett also thanked Yoshiharu Ameku, DDS, for his service as vice chair of the department over the past year.

“His steady leadership, professionalism, and commitment to supporting students, staff, and faculty have made a lasting impact, and we thank him for his contributions during this time of transition,” Dr. Kugel said.
