New web page streamlines research access for med students

Kari Nelson, PhD

The UNMC College of Medicine has created a new web page offering research opportunities to both its current students and for students planning to apply to the medical school in the future.

For current students, who must sign in with their UNMC ID to access the page, the site provides a potential portal into research work.

“The med student-specific site provides faculty members the ability to post research opportunities they have available to our medical students,” said Kari Nelson, PhD, director of undergraduate medical education research and enhanced medical education track (EMET) programs for the college. “Medical students can view these opportunities, get more information and in some cases even apply for the opportunity on the new site.”

Once faculty submit an opportunity, it will be routed to the Office of Medical Education Research Director and will post to the page immediately upon approval.

Additionally on the site, students can find the Medical Student Summer Research Program (MSSRP) application. This is for current UNMC M1s only, and applications for the next cohort are due Feb. 7, 2026.

The site also features information about the EMETs, the annual Medical Student Research Showcase, student travel funding for conference presentations, and information on the MD Honors Thesis (which is open to third-year students).

“We have many exciting research opportunities for our medical students, and this site will make it easier for students to explore all the possibilities and connect with those that most interest them.  It will also make it easier for faculty to connect with medical students to assist with their research,” Dr. Nelson said.
