Medical students from UNMC will learn their residency assignments on Match Day, joining their counterparts at schools nationwide to learn for the first time where they will be studying their chosen specialties following graduation. UNMC’s event will be held on Friday, March 20, at the Omaha Design Center at 1502 Cuming St. Doors open at 10 a.m.; students will learn their matches at 11 a.m.

Match Day is a significant milestone. Students find out where they will be spending their next several years as they begin their respective medical careers. It’s often an emotional day, not just for the matching students, but for their colleagues, family members and mentors, including UNMC faculty who look back fondly at their own Match Days.
“The faculty and staff of the college are always thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of their celebration and recognize what they have accomplished,” said Bradley Britigan, MD, dean of the UNMC College of Medicine. “Our students will carry the memories of this pivotal day for the rest of their lives.”
The moment is significant because the matching medical students can savor that they have “made it,” while also knowing that they have only just begun.
Jeremy Vinton, a UNMC medical student from Mullen, Nebraska, hopes to match in family medicine and eventually practice in rural Nebraska.
“I couldn’t be more grateful for my time at UNMC, and for the colleagues, mentors and friends who provided the kindling that stoked my interest in family medicine into a steady flame,” he said. “I look forward to carrying that fire through residency and, afterward, taking the torch back to the Sandhills.”
After the opening of envelopes at 11 a.m., medical students take turns walking up to the podium to their own chosen theme music. They then read their match aloud to the audience, are given a celebratory sparkling beverage and mark their respective destinations with pins upon a map of the United States. It is a day of photographs and hugs.
All fourth-year medical students, their guests and UNMC College of Medicine faculty and staff are invited to attend. Tickets are not required for entrance.
