Sicong Zhang, PhD, is a new faculty member at UNMC.
- Name: Sicong Zhang, PhD
- Title and department at UNMC: Assistant professor, Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases
- Hometown: Shanghai, China
Education:
- BS, life sciences, Fudan University
- PhD, cancer biology, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
Research and professional interests:
My research focuses on gene regulation, particularly transcription and RNA regulation, to uncover the molecular mechanisms that drive cancer development and therapeutic resistance. Through this work, I aim to advance our understanding of cancer biology and identify new therapeutic strategies for cancer.
How I became interested in cancer research:
My interest in cancer research stems from personal experiences. Seeing people close to me go through the pain of cancer and losing them to the disease deeply affected me and inspired me to pursue this field. I wanted to contribute in a meaningful way toward improving patients’ lives through scientific discovery. I have long been fascinated by gene regulation and the fundamental mechanisms that control how cells function. Cancer cells provide a powerful model system for studying these processes and understanding how gene regulation becomes dysregulated in disease. I hope my work can both uncover fundamental biological principles and, even in a small way, contribute to improving and saving patients’ lives.
Professional Membership:
- American Association for Cancer Research
Three things people may not know about me:
- I like seafood.
- I like Enka, although I don’t speak Japanese.
- I applied to the graduate program at Eppley.
