Priscilla Phillips is retiring from the UNMC Department of Pediatrics after more than 30 years with UNMC. According to her peers, Priscilla’s career was defined by steady leadership, adaptability and a consistent focus on supporting patients, families and colleagues.
“Since joining UNMC in 1994, she has been a valued part of the department and a trusted presence through years of growth and change,” said Lisa Runco, administrative director, Department of Pediatrics
Phillips came to UNMC after working as an accountant at Midlands Community Hospital in Papillion. Her path to pediatrics began through a personal connection: She met Jenny Strawn, a UNMC pediatric cardiology nurse specialist, at their daughters’ gymnastics class. The two became close friends, and Strawn later encouraged Phillips to apply for an opening for office manager in pediatric cardiology. She interviewed with division chief John Kugler, MD, and was offered the position, beginning what would become a long and meaningful career at UNMC.
One of Phillips’ favorite aspects of working in pediatrics was the opportunity to collaborate with physicians and staff and sharing their goal of serving patients and families.
“My experience has shown me that everyone contributes to care of the patient,” she said. “It’s been an honor to play my part alongside so many talented and caring providers and administrators.”
Among the many changes she witnessed during her career, Phillips identifies the COVID-19 pandemic as the most significant, in the way that it reshaped her work, learning and daily life in lasting ways. “At the same time, witnessing the resilience of individuals and teams as they adapted and continued moving forward together was an inspiration,” Phillips said.
In retirement, Phillips plans to continue her 5 a.m. visits to the Sarpy YMCA, spend more time with family and friends, participate in her Bible study group and take some opportunities for travel.
“Priscilla’s career was marked by her passion, professionalism and dedication to the areas and individuals she supported,” Kari Simonsen, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics, said. “We can’t thank her enough for all that she has given over her career.”
