Get Moving: Staying active during the winter months

Get Moving is an occasional series from the UNMC Center Healthy Living to promote activity and healthy living. Andrea Swett is the director of the center.

As temperatures drop and daylight hours become shorter, it can be tempting to become less active. For many, cold weather makes it harder to stay motivated and maintain regular exercise habits. However, regular physical activity can help boost mood, increase energy levels, improve sleep, and support overall physical and mental well-being. Don’t let winter derail your fitness routine. The benefits are too important to let the winter season interfere with your health goals.

Here are a few simple ways to stay active during the colder months:

  • Choose activities you enjoy. The best exercise is the one you will actually do. Whether it is walking, dancing, strength training or a fitness class, find something that keeps you engaged.
  • Find an accountability partner. Exercising with a friend or joining a group fitness class can help you stay committed when motivation is low.
  • Make a plan. Schedule your workouts just as you would any other important appointment. Having a plan makes it easier to stay consistent.
  • Try “exercise snacks.” Short bursts of activity throughout the day can add up. A few minutes of movement between meetings or household tasks can help reduce sedentary time and support overall health.
  • Move indoors. If cold weather keeps you from exercising outside, consider indoor alternatives such as walking at the gym, climbing stairs or following an at-home workout.

Planning to Exercise Outdoors?

If you prefer outdoor activity year-round, dress appropriately for the weather. Wear layers that wick moisture, provide insulation and protect against the winter elements. Don’t forget gloves, warm socks and a hat to help protect fingers, toes and ears from the cold.
