UNMC College of Pharmacy students recently honored Nate Sutera, PharmD, with the college’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award.
Dr. Sutera, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice and science, was presented the annual award at the UNMC College of Pharmacy’s fall honors. He had been the runner-up the past two years in the annual student-body vote. Anders Freeland, P4 class president, noted Dr. Sutera drew high praise from students nominating him for the award.
“Students described this faculty member as a ‘phenomenal educator,’ ‘caring,’ ‘knowledgeable’ and ‘passionate,’” Freeland said, before announcing the winner’s name and calling Dr. Sutera to accept the honor.
It’s been a big year for Dr. Sutera, who also won the 2026 UNMC Excellence in Educational Service Award at UNMC’s Impact in Education awards.
In a Q and A reflecting upon that honor, he said: “My teaching experience has shown me that teaching works best when you don’t hide your enthusiasm. We’re in this work because we love it, and students can tell when that passion is real. When you let that shine through, learning becomes more engaging and more human.”
The students recognized Kristen Driver, PharmD, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice and science, as runner-up for the honor. She is in her second year on faculty and works out of UNMC’s Kearney campus. Freeland called her “an incredible addition to the UNMC College of Pharmacy.”
