Wellness Wednesday – Set a goal

When trying to get fit, it helps to have a goal beyond weight loss.

For example, targeting your workouts toward a specific event — completing a 5K, participating in a charity walk or taking part in a triathlon — can help keep you motivated on those days when you just want to fall onto the couch and stuff donuts in your mouth.

In the summer and fall, there are a variety of events that can serve as milestones on your fitness journey, including events affiliated with UNMC. Circle one of these dates on your calendar and use it for motivation on those days you just don’t feel like moving.

Events include:

July

OwL Ride (July 13): This eight- or 17-mile nighttime bike ride also benefits the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities, which supports programs of the Munroe-Meyer Institute.

Omaha Triathlon (July 21): The Omaha Triathlon offers an Olympic-distance length (1,500-meter open water swim, 40-kilometer bike ride over some grueling hills and a 10K run) or a shorter, sprint distance (750-meter swim, 20-kilometer ride and a 5K run).

August

SHARING the Green golf tournament (Aug. 9): Take part in this tournament and support the UNMC student-run SHARING clinics.

Corporate Cycling Challenge (Aug. 18): Ride with UNMC coworkers in this event.

Boxer 500 (Aug. 18): If running is more your thing, this 5K race (with a one mile walk/run option) raises funds to benefit the Great Plains Colon Cancer Task Force.

Black Squirrel Triathlon (Aug. 24): The city of Council Bluffs’ annual triathlon calls for a 1,000-yard open-water swim in Lake Manawa, a 19.3 mile bike ride and a 10K run. There is also a shorter youth triathlon that runs at the same time.

September

Corporate Cup (Sept. 15): This race supports the American Lung Association and offers a 10K course for runners or a two-mile course for walkers. Show your UNMC colors by running as part of the university’s team.
