Nancy Waltman, Ph.D., a professor in the UNMC College of Nursing-Lincoln division, will discuss maintaining strong bones at the next Lincoln Science Cafe at 7 p.m. on May 5 at Brewsky’s, 201 N. 8th St., in Lincoln.
Dr. Waltman will examine controversies surrounding diet, calcium and vitamin D, exercises and medications related to bone health. She has a master’s degree in nursing, a doctoral degree in educational administration and instruction, and is a certified adult nurse practitioner. She has taught courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Currently, she is teaching courses for advanced practice nurses in health assessment, clinical medicine, and oncology.
Dr Waltman’s research has focused on cancer nursing and osteoporosis. Her current research is on prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in breast cancer survivors. Funding sources have included the Oncology Nursing Society and the National Institutes of Health.
Science Cafes involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone (21 and older), and take place in casual settings like pubs and coffeehouses. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. A scientist gives a brief presentation followed by a question and answer period.
