Walk-through brain exhibit to highlight Nebraska Science Festival Expo

Did you know the adult human brain weighs about three pounds, is approximately 75 percent water and uses about 20 percent of your body’s total oxygen supply?

Stop by the Nebraska Science Festival’s public expo on April 18 at The Durham Museum to learn these facts and more, as well as walk through a giant inflatable brain.

The Expo caps the third annual Nebraska Science Festival, which runs from April 10 through April 18 in communities across the state. Admission to the Durham Museum and Science Expo is free with a SciFest ticket (available at www.nescifest.com). The Expo runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Expo will feature dozens of booths with fun and engaging hands-on learning opportunities that promote science and its impact in our everyday lives. Learn more about birds, sustainable energy, how river water is transformed into safe drinking water, weather, invasive species, astronomy, robotics and more.

Among the highlights will be the world’s only portable, inflatable, walk-through brain exhibit. The MEGA Brain® is approximately 18 feet long by 14 feet wide by 12 feet high. Visitors will enter the exhibit through the frontal lobe, which is responsible for personality and higher cognitive functions, and exit through the cerebellum, the portion of the brain responsible for balance and coordination.

The MEGA Brain will provide SciFest fans with a highly interactive educational experience about the central nervous system’s most critical organ. Visitors can step inside the human brain, learn about the various structures and normal brain function, observe examples of brain trauma and disease, and view displays explaining some of the latest neurological medical treatments.

The Nebraska Science Festival is a collaboration of organizations and individuals interested in the advancement of science literacy. The Science Festival is designed to make science accessible, interactive, relevant and fun for kids and adults alike. In addition to UNMC, other sponsors, to date, include Nebraska Medicine, the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, Metro Credit Union, HDR, West Corporation and media sponsors KETV and the Omaha World-Herald.
