UNMC committed to protecting colleagues’ identities

Identity theft continues to be a concern to all individuals. Recently the Office of Personnel Management announced that personal data for 21.5 million federal employees, contractors, applicants and family members was stolen via cyber threat.

UNMC is committed to protecting employees from the misuse of their personal information.

UNMC will not use Social Security numbers to identify students, employees, patients or other information providers, outside of uses specifically required by law such as financial aid, patient billing, payroll and benefit functions, said Sharon Welna, information security officer.

A major challenge is identifying all of the areas where a Social Security number is used. If you are aware of the use of a Social Security number that is not legally required, notify your supervisor or Welna at 559-2545.
