Dr. Bassett honored for volunteer service

picture disc.Craig Bassett, M.D., recently was named the UNMC College of Medicine’s 2005 Volunteer of the Year.

The award was established to honor volunteer faculty who have played an extraordinary role in the educational programs of both UNMC students and residents.

“Since the beginning of his private practice, Dr. Bassett has been actively involved in medical student education,” said Carl Smith, M.D., Chris and Marie Olson Chair of the UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Smith nominated Dr. Bassett for the award.

“His educational experiences are highly rated by the students, deal with common issues related to the healthcare of women and attest to his commitment to the educational program of the university,” Dr. Smith said.

Dr. Bassett graduated from UNMC in 1974 and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology in 1977.

After residency, Dr. Bassett entered into private practice at Nebraska Methodist Hospital, where he became the director of the medical student clerkship experience at the hospital in 1987.

But Dr. Bassett doesn’t just direct the program, he also serves as a clinical preceptor and holds weekly educational sessions with the medical students assigned to Methodist Hospital.

“Dr. Bassett is always available to students, genuinely interested in providing superb patient care and serves as an excellent role model,” said UNMC College of Medicine Dean John Gollen, M.D., Ph.D., during last month’s hooding ceremony.

“He is the type of physician that inspires students to select obstetrics and gynecology as a career choice,” Dr. Gollen said.
