INBRE Scholars: Margaret Polland

On May 29, the Nebraska Institutional Development Award Program (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) program welcomed 28 undergraduate students from across Nebraska as they embark on their summer research experience at Creighton University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and UNMC.

The breakdown of this year’s 28 INBRE Scholars include:

  • Representatives of nine colleges and universities;
  • 18 women; and
  • 10 men.

Below Margaret Polland, a rising junior at Nebraska Wesleyan University, talks about her INBRE experience.

Who is Margaret Polland?
I am going to be a junior in the fall semester. I am the youngest of four siblings and a nerd.

Has science always been a part of your life?
I have always enjoyed science and was inspired this past year to pursue research by my professors.

How is it important to you?
I feel that I cannot explain why I find science important because to me it simply is. Science has made countless contributions to humanity.

Why did you choose to participate in the INBRE program?
I chose the INBRE program because it is more than a summer program and requires substantial work and learning. I wanted a program that would teach me, a person without prior research experience, and grant me the opportunity to work alongside professionals.

What do you hope to gain from the program?
I’m hoping to gain experience and knowledge the most from the program.
