UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., received a bit of a surprise while attending the Association of Academic Health Centers (AAHC) annual meeting in Philadelphia last week.

Dr. Maurer was unsuspectingly enjoying his dinner at the meeting last Saturday when he was called to the stage by AAHC President and CEO Steven Wartman, M.D., Ph.D., and recognized for important contributions to the organization.

“Dr. Maurer has been a great asset to the AAHC on many fronts,” Dr. Wartman said, “and under his leadership, UNMC has become a major contributor to the AAHC’s efforts.”

Dr. Maurer’s contribution to the AAHC includes serving as the association’s inaugural membership committee chairman and he has involved UNMC in several projects to assist the AAHC.

An example of this is UNMC’s recent participation in a pilot project to test the association’s new census information gathering system. UNMC was among a few members of the AAHC to participate in the test.

The AAHC is a national, non-profit organization that looks to improve health and well-being through vigorous leadership of the nation’s academic health centers. The association is composed of accredited, degree-granting institutions that educate a wide variety of health care professionals, offer comprehensive basic and advanced patient care and conduct a wide spectrum of health care research.

Dr. Maurer said he was honored to be recognized by a group that fills an important role in health care.

“I was certainly surprised and touched by the recognition from the AAHC,” Dr. Maurer said. “That it came from a group that does such fantastic work made it all the more meaningful.”
