DoD funding opportunities focus of Tuesday event

DARPA Day changes

DARPA Day, which originally was scheduled for Wednesday, has been rescheduled for Tuesday at noon in the Storz Pavilion, Rooms 3 and 4. Those wishing to attend this session should RSVP to Suman Barua at SCBarua@unmc.edu by Saturday.

Increasing awareness about research funding opportunities with the Department of Defense (DoD) will be the focus of a Tuesday event sponsored by UNeMed and the UNMC Vice Chancellor for Research.

The event, called “DARPA Day,” will begin at noon in the Clarkson Hospital Storz Pavilion, Rooms 3 and 4, and will feature a presentation by Brett Giroir, M.D., director of the DARPA Defense Sciences Office.

DARPA stands for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is the DoD’s central research and development organization.

The event should prove useful to UNMC investigators because it will highlight funding alternatives in the face of decreased NIH funding, said Paula Turpen, Ph.D., UNMC’s director of research resources.

“It turns out the Department of Defense has quite a bit of money to spend on research,” Dr. Turpen said. “Many of our investigators might not know about the breadth of biomedical research areas funded by the DoD.”

DARPA is interested in high-risk and high-payoff research that may bring dramatic advances for traditional military roles and missions.

Some research areas DARPA is particularly interested in include:

  • Biological warfare defense;
  • Tactical biomedical technologies;
  • Restorative biomedical technologies;
  • Maintaining human combat performance; and
  • Biologically inspired platforms and systems.

Dr. Giroir’s presentation will describe the history and mission of DARPA, how to secure DARPA funding, future DARPA research objectives and how to become a DARPA program officer.

Those wishing to attend this session should RSVP to Suman Barua at SCBarua@unmc.edu by Saturday.
