How I fell in love with medicine and my specialty: My journey into maternal-fetal medicine began during my residency in India, when I witnessed a young mother die from eclampsia – a preventable tragedy that haunted me. That moment crystallized my purpose: No woman should die bringing life into this world.

I do a specialty clinic taking care of pregnant patients with a history of preeclampsia, women with hypertension, transplant, lupus, antiphospholipid antibodies or other conditions that increase the risk of developing preeclampsia.

I fell in love with the detective work of high-risk obstetrics – unraveling why some pregnancies develop preeclampsia while others don’t. The discovery that circulating proteins like sFlt-1 could predict life-threatening complications before symptoms appeared felt like finding a key to a locked door. Each research finding, from bench to bedside, brought us closer to saving lives. But science alone wasn’t enough. Seeing the stark racial disparities in maternal deaths, particularly on Chicago’s South Side, transformed my mission. Creating programs like postpartum telehealth and remote patient monitoring and working in community clinics showed me that true impact requires marrying rigorous science with compassionate, equitable care. This field chose me as much as I chose it.
