Information security hosting events for cybersecurity awareness

UNMC and Nebraska Medicine Information Security has scheduled a series of events in October for National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, even offering participants a chance to win prizes.

Activities include: 

  • Oct. 9, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Gene Kowel with the Omaha FBI will discuss emerging cyber threats and cyber crime investigations. Sign up to attend the event at this link.
  • Oct. 14, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Warren Hagelstien with the Cyber Security & Infrastructure Security Agency will discuss recent threats and incidents that have occurred to health and public health, as well as this year’s National Cyber Security Awareness theme, “Secure Our World.” Sign up to attend at this link.
  • Oct. 23, 9:30-10:30 a.m.: Keelan Stewart with Cync Health will discuss the importance of including “cyber hygiene” in patient treatment plans and ways to include it. Sign up at this link. 
  • A cybersecurity meme contest. See more about how to participate at the med center’s Cyber Security Awareness Month webpage.
  • A “phishing tournament” in which competitors will receive phishing email attempts from med center information security that they should report. Sign up for the Phishing Tournament at this link.  

Tables promoting information security also will be stationed outside the Nebraska Cafe every Wednesday in October from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Throughout the month, participants will be eligible for drawings for weekly and grand prize giveaways.
