Internal Medicine names its Top Teachers for 2025

The UNMC Department of Internal Medicine released its Top Teacher Awards for 2025 based on medical student and resident evaluations. 

“The department is fortunate to have a large number of excellent teachers and designating the top teachers is a difficult task,” said Mark Rupp, MD, interim chair of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine. “I’m grateful for the enthusiasm and attention that the entire faculty brings to our educational mission. Internal medicine has long had a proud tradition of educational excellence and we aim to keep it that way.”

Of the faculty members with student or resident evaluation data in 2025, 80 individuals were named “Top Teacher.” They are:

To be eligible for “top teacher” awards, faculty members must have received at least six evaluations during the last year.

Criteria Used:

1. Department faculty member with 1 or more learner evaluation (n=239)

2. Faculty with ≥ 6 total evaluations (n=159)

3. Count‑weight (z‑score) evaluation score of top 30% of total eligible faculty (n=72)

*4. Top 30% of Phase 1 department faculty with Phase 1 evaluations (n=8)

5. <3 delinquent resident evaluations

*Independent of criteria 1–3

Count‑weight z‑score formula:

[(# resident evals)(resident eval z‑score) + (# student evals)(student eval z‑score)] ÷ (total # evals)

 Internal Medicine also has “Top Teacher” designations in its fellowship programs.
