Global Center for Health Security releases annual report

John Lowe, PhD, director of the Global Center for Health Security

The Global Center for Health Security at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine has released its latest annual report.

The report, which covers the time period of July 1, 2024, through Dec. 31, 2025, emphasizes three major areas: preparedness and response, international engagement and military collaboration.

During the reporting period, GCHS teams supported response efforts to a Lassa fever case in Iowa and participated in deployments in Rwanda and Uganda for Marburg virus and Ebola virus, respectively. The center also conducted and participated in preparedness exercises, including a nationwide FIFA World Cup tabletop exercise, the Tranquil Passport exercise to test a portable biocontainment unit and annual training at the National Quarantine Unit and Nebraska Biocontainment Unit.

The report highlights expanded international partnerships, including a summit with health leaders in East Africa and a new agreement with the Japanese Institute of Health Security, as well as continued collaboration with military and federal partners to strengthen preparedness for high-consequence infectious disease threats.

John Lowe, PhD, director of the Global Center for Health Security, said, “Over the past year-plus, the Global Center for Health Security has continued its evolution from an interdisciplinary team forged in crisis to a cross-campus center defined by sustained capacity, readiness and collaboration. In a dynamic and often uncertain health security landscape, our focus has remained clear: maintaining continuity, strengthening partnerships and preparing for what comes next through rigorous research and operational readiness.”
