De-stress next week with activities, snacks, yoga and more

UNMC’s De-Stress Week activities kick off Monday, April 27. This spring, UNMC students, staff and faculty can unwind with activities ranging from coffee and donuts to button making, virtual stretch breaks and more.

The following De-Stress Week events are planned on the Omaha campus:

Monday, April 27:

  • Morning Coffee Break, 8 a.m., Durham Research Center II, Maurer Commons — Start the work week off with a free cup of coffee or tea (while supplies last).
  • Free Hatha Yoga, noon, Center for Healthy Living, Room 1009 — This free class, sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living, emphasizes breathwork, postures, relaxation and meditation. Postures are held for an extended period to ensure proper alignment and build core strength and flexibility. Each class will include pranayama, sun and moon salutations, gentle inversions and savasana. Pre-registration is not required; check in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.

Tuesday, April 28:

  • Virtual Stretch Break, 9 a.m., available virtually at this Zoom link Take a 10-minute stretch break from anywhere with the Center for Healthy Living.
  • Student Snack Break, 10 a.m., McGoogan Health Sciences Library, Wittson Hall, sixth floor — Take a much-needed break and recharge at the McGoogan Health Sciences Library snack break. Staff will provide delicious and nutritious snacks for students (while supplies last).
    • Students at Norfolk, Lincoln, Kearney and Scottsbluff-Gering campuses can enjoy snacks at their respective campuses. 
  • Lavender and Lemonade, 11 a.m., Wigton Heritage Center, Dr. Leland and Dorothy Olson Atrium, fourth floor — Stop by and make a relaxing lavender satchel and enjoy a lemonade bar (while supplies last).
  • Pilates Fusion, noon, Center for Healthy Living, Room 1009 — Engage in a full-body workout using light weights, resistance bands and bodyweight exercises to build strength, improve stability and support functional movement. This free class, sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living, begins and ends with a gentle mobility flow designed to enhance flexibility, increase range of motion and release tension. Pre-registration is not required; check in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.
  • Yin Yoga, 5:15 p.m., Center for Healthy Living, Room 1009 — This slower-paced class focuses on holding poses for longer periods, allowing muscles to relax and promoting work on fascia and connective tissues. The results are improved flexibility and a deeper sense of release. This free class is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. Pre-registration is not required; check in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.

Wednesday, April 29:

  • Button Making, 12:30 p.m., Sorrell Center, Alumni Commons, second floor — Stop by and create a button for any bag, jacket or shirt. Design a button or choose from pre-designed options. Supplies will be provided.

Thursday, April 30:

  • Donut Stress, 8 a.m., Sorrell Center, Alumni Commons, second floor — Start the morning off with a donut (while supplies last).
  • Virtual Stretch Break, noon, available virtually at this Zoom link Take a 10-minute stretch break from anywhere with the Center for Healthy Living.
  • Book Bedazzling Crafternoon, 1 p.m., McGoogan Health Sciences Library, Wittson Hall, sixth floor — Take a brain break by crafting. Join UNMC’s Counseling and Psychological Services’ Outreach, Access and Resources and the McGoogan Library to bedazzle a book or bookmark. Bring a favorite book, choose a donated book or decorate a bookmark and add some sparkle to the day. Supplies will be provided, just bring your creativity.
  • Slow Flow Yoga, 5:15 p.m., Center for Healthy Living, Room 1004 — This slower-paced class focuses on holding poses for longer periods, allowing muscles to relax and promoting work on fascia and connective tissues. The results are improved flexibility and a deeper sense of release. This free class is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Living. Pre-registration is not required; check in five minutes prior to class at the front desk.

Friday, May 1:

  • May Day Baskets, 11:30 a.m., Durham Research Center II, Maurer Commons — Stop by and create a spring May Day basket (while supplies last).

Beyond the virtual stretch breaks, UNMC campuses in Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk and Scottsbluff should check with their De-Stress representative for activities being held in their respective location.
