UNMC has launched a new partnership with Omaha Public Radio (KIOS, 91.5 FM) that highlights the value of medical science and research to the public.
Beginning Tuesday (Sept. 1), KIOS will air segments titled Heartbeat, to help listeners gain a deeper understanding of how research functions and impacts our daily lives. The weekly, six-minute segments will air each Tuesday at 8:44 a.m. and again at 4:44 p.m. on 91.5 FM.
During the conversations – which are recorded, edited and then aired – KIOS host Michael Lyon and a UNMC researcher will discuss science and health-specific research topics. Longer versions of the interview will be available on KIOS’ digital platform at kios.org and also shared via UNMC’s digital platforms.
Administered by UNMC Strategic Communications, the project is the brainchild of UNMC researcher Rebecca Oberley Deegan, PhD, who pitched the idea as part of her 2026 iLEAD project.
“As misinformation and distrust of science continue to negatively affect public health, Heartbeat will serve as a trusted voice on KIOS,” Dr. Oberley Deegan said. “The segment will give scientists a direct way to engage with the community, share accurate information and showcase the innovative research happening right here in Omaha.”
Listeners will gain insights into a wide range of topics, including how to evaluate scientific information online, how research is funded, how clinical trials are conducted, and how the scientific process works. The program also will spotlight emerging discoveries and innovative research advancements, helping audiences better understand the journey from scientific inquiry to real-world impact. By making science accessible and relevant, KIOS’ Heartbeat will empower listeners to make informed decisions about their health and engage more confidently with scientific issues that affect their lives and communities.
