UNMC’s role in national defense preparedness will expand with today’s groundbreaking ceremony for an Infectious Disease Air Transport (IDAT) training facility and celebratory launch of its new Office for the Advancement of Military Medicine.
The campus community is invited to attend the 10 a.m. ceremony on the southern edge of UNMC’s Omaha campus at 40th and Mason Streets.
The free-standing, $17.4 million facility will extend programs offered by the United States Air Force C-STARS (Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills) Omaha Unit stationed at UNMC. The facility will house biocontainment transport modules and an aircraft fuselage designed to provide advanced training for aeromedical, healthcare and response personnel on safe transport and care of patients affected by high-consequence infectious diseases. Occupancy is expected in fall 2027.
The project will be funded by Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending projects funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration and Department of Defense funding sources.
The ceremony also will recognize the OAMM, which coordinates support to programs and initiatives advancing military medical capabilities, preparing for strategic health threats and strengthening civilian-military integration.
Following the groundbreaking ceremony, the med center community may attend an exposition from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Dr. Edwin G. & Dorothy Balbach Davis Global Center.
