Dr. Klepser to lead session on ‘Culture by Design’

Donald Klepser, PhD

UNMC faculty, staff and leaders are invited to attend “Culture by Design,” an upcoming UNMC Faculty Development session led by Donald Klepser, PhD, Joseph D. Williams Endowed Dean of the College of Pharmacy.

The event, to be held Nov. 10 at the Sorrell Center, Room 2018, will draw on concepts from the book “Culture by Design” by David J. Friedman to challenge participants to move beyond aspirational mission and value statements and focus instead on the everyday behaviors that define an organization’s culture.

“There is nothing wrong with vision statements, but even the best plans and strategies are doomed to fail without the right culture encouraging people to implement them,” Dr. Klepser said.

Dr. Klepser has championed an approach to culture-building centered on defining and reinforcing the specific behaviors an organization wants to see. Rather than treating culture as an abstract set of values, he has encouraged teams to make those values visible through everyday actions, communication practices, and organizational rituals.

During the November session, participants will explore practical strategies that can be immediately applied to intentionally create a positive workplace culture that strengthens trust, supports collaboration and engagement, and fosters greater success.

“Culture by Design” will be held in person on Nov. 10, from noon-1 p.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 2018. A recording of the event will be made available afterward. The session is sponsored by the UNMC Office of Faculty Development and the Office of Engagement. To register to attend the event, or request a recording, please RSVP online. The full faculty development calendar can be seen online.
