The popular CBS show, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” trails the investigations of a team of Las Vegas forensic scientists as they uncover the circumstances behind mysterious deaths and other crimes.

At the next Omaha Science Cafe, attendees will get to hear firsthand from a local forensic analyst about some cases she worked and the truth behind the popular TV series.

On Tuesday, July 7, Mellissa Helligso, a forensic DNA analyst at UNMC, will present “CSI Omaha: the Fact behind the Fiction.” Her presentation will begin at 7 p.m. at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St. in Omaha.

The Science Cafes are part of an effort by UNMC and other groups to increase the population’s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC, BioNebraska and the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures, Science Cafes are held the first Tuesday of each month.

Upcoming Omaha Science Cafes

  • July 7 – Mellissa Helligso “CSI Omaha: the Fact behind the Fiction”
  • Aug. 4 – Dr. Bruce Buehler “”Modifying our Genetic Blueprint, Nature versus Nutrition”
  • Sept. 1 – Dr. Jim Sorrell “The Science of Psychiatry”

A more scientifically literate populace is a goal in UNMC’s strategic plan. The goal of the Science Cafes is to introduce and get young adults interested in science by presenting it in a casual setting.

Dan Anderson, M.D, Ph.D., assistant professor of cardiology, brought his personal journey with diet and exercise and his practice to the Slowdown when he spoke on “Diet, Exercise, Inflammation and Heart Disease: What’s the Connection” at the June Science Cafe.

Those who attend on July 7 should arrive early as free pizza will once again be provided by the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures for the first 50 people.
