Disaster Behavioral Health Conference July 12-13

For the fifth consecutive year, area mental health professionals will gather July 12-13 to look at the psychological aspects of dealing with disasters. About 200 people are expected to attend the Nebraska Disaster Behavioral Health Conference at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 555 S. 10th St., in downtown Omaha.

Research shows promise for reducing burden of HIV treatment

UNMC is conducting research targeted at reducing the daily HIV/AIDS multiple pill regimen to a single monthly injection using a nanotechnology drug delivery system. By using macrophages, the cells that carry HIV throughout the body, researchers have successfully delivered anti-retroviral drugs directly to tissues where the virus grows.

Dennis McNeilly, Psy.D., a clinical geropsychologist and associate professor of psychiatry in UNMC’s Department of Psychiatry, has been elected to a one-year term as president for the National Council on Problem Gambling.

Haven retires after 11 years as associate dean, 38 years at UNMC

She moves like white lightening, bolting down the hall so fast it seems she’s miles away before anyone else takes a step. Today, Mary Haven, associate dean of UNMC’s School of Allied Health Professions, will stop to celebrate the past 38 years at UNMC. Haven’s retirement party is today from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the private dining rooms.

Cattlemen’s Ball to take place Saturday

About 25 miles west of Lincoln, just north of Milford, is a former church camp where something righteous is happening on Saturday – the Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska. The ball raises money for cancer research at UNMC.

UNMC’s Board of Counselors elected officers for 2006 and welcomed 11 new members at the annual board meeting on April 24.

South Omaha clinic changes name, relocates

UNMC announced today that its South Omaha Neighborhood Association (SONA) clinic is moving into bigger space and changing its name. The move and name change will occur this week as the SONA Clinic at 31st & Q Streets closes its doors today and moves all health care services five blocks west to 36th & Q Streets. The clinic will reopen Monday as the UNMC Community Health Center.

National storyteller, cancer survivor to perform Sept. 22

Nationally recognized storyteller Victoria Burnett will present a one-hour performance, “Storyspiritualogy” the art of telling stories through spirituals, at noon on Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. Food will be served to the first 50 attendees.

Heart Walk surpasses 2005 goal

More than 2,200 people turned out for the 10th annual Omaha-Metro American Heart Walk on May 7 and raised more than $415,000, surpassing the 2005 goal of $375,000. This is the first year the local goal has been reach.
