Construction update – Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center
You may have noticed a new addition to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center project site. It can be seen over the rooftops of the campus’ tallest buildings and spotted all the way from West Omaha. It is a tower crane that will help to construct the new Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center facility. At 300 feet tall with a wing span of 255 feet, it’s hard to miss. It’s also bright yellow.

Dr. Oleynikov receives IDEA award
UNMC’s Dmitry Oleynikov, M.D., and his collaborator Shane Farritor, Ph.D., of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, received the University of Nebraska’s Innovation, Development and Engagement (IDEA) Award Wednesday. Dr. Oleynikov, the Joseph and Richard Still Endowed Professor of Surgery, director of the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, and director of the Center for Advanced Surgical Technology at UNMC, is one of UNMC’s most internationally recognized scientists.

Tackling med school while being tackled
On May 10, Beau Kildow received his medical degree at UNMC’s spring Omaha commencement. It will likely be his greatest highlight at Ralston Arena. Likely be? Well, there was that game-winning touchdown earlier this season. Kildow, who matched at Duke and is headed for a residency in orthopedics, spent his last two years of medical school also playing professional indoor football for the Omaha Beef.

Dr. Gold receives national honor
UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., was honored last week in Chicago as one of 25 recipients of the 2014 Leadership Awards by Becker’s Hospital Review. The awards recognize men and women who have made remarkable contributions and will leave lasting legacies to their respective health systems, hospitals and communities.

COM Student of the Month – Jennifer Wittry, third-year student
Each month, InterCOM will highlight a “Student of the Month” from the College of Medicine. Students will be featured for their participation in activities outside of medical school and for making a difference in the community. The goal is to recognize students for what they are doing and to encourage other students to get involved in the community. After all, medical school should be much more than studying.
