CDC director at today’s Biocontainment Unit unveiling
Gov. Dave Heineman will unveil Nebraska’s new Biocontainment Unit at The Nebraska Medical Center today, a first-of-its-kind in the nation. The governor welcomes Julie Gerberding, M.D., director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to Omaha for a tour and briefing about the new unit and the collaborative effort behind it.

2005 Kiewit, Scott Entrepreneurial awards announced
HKS Medical Information Systems is the 2005 winner of the Walter Scott Entrepreneurial Business Award, University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken announced Tuesday. Byers “Bud” Shaw Jr., M.D., professor and chairman of UNMC’s Department of Surgery, founded HKS Medical Information Systems in 1993 with Hubert Hickman and Paul Kenyon. The company develops, sells and implements software for hospitals to track solid organ transplant data. A four-student team from the University of Nebraska at Kearney won the Peter Kiewit Student Entrepreneurial Award.

Inappropriate use of computer resources leads to arrest
On Tuesday, a workstation in the McGoogan Library of Medicine computing cluster was being used to view objectionable material, which is prohibited by federal law. Following established procedures, UNMC Campus Security contacted the Omaha Police Department and an arrest was made. The individual arrested was not affiliated with UNMC.

Edward V. Fehringer, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, was inducted recently as a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons during ceremonies at the Academy’s 72nd annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Since joining UNMC, Pierre Fayad, M.D., has built a new department and recruited neurology specialists. He has built programs that greatly enhanced the capabilities of UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, to help patients suffering from strokes, seizures, muscle and nerve disorders, brain cancer and degenerative disorders of the brain such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and dementia.
