Dr. Atwood honored for excellence in academic nursing profession
Jan Atwood, Ph.D., has spent her life in the pursuit of improving the lives of people through nursing care, education and research. This month, she was honored for the impact she has made at UNMC, through a Florence Niedfelt Professorship at the UNMC College of Nursing. The endowed, three-year appointment honors and rewards an outstanding faculty member for excellence in research, teaching, leadership, mentoring of colleagues and students, innovative leadership in a clinical service project, and involvement and work in organizations outside the college.

Internal medicine chair forms executive council
As chairman of UNMC’s internal medicine department, John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., oversees a department whose population size exceeds some small towns in Nebraska.
To better manage this vast department, Dr. Gollan has established an Executive Council to assist him in policy-making decisions, provide feedback and serve as contacts on issues ranging from education to research to primary care.

Hollywood brings organ donation to the big screen
NHS wants to help movie fans separate fact from fiction in the Denzel Washington movie, “John Q.” The movie, which opens in theaters Feb. 15, tells the fictional story of a boy in need of a heart transplant.

Col. Oldfield’s UNMC donation in memory of service women
In memory of Lt. Col. Charity Earley and all women who served in the military during World War II, Col. A. Barney Oldfield USAF (ret.) has donated $500 to the Vada Kinman Oldfield Alzheimer’s Research Fund at UNMC.
