UNMC held Spring Spirit Day on its Omaha campus April 1. More than 500 students, faculty and staff stopped by for root beer floats, popcorn and candy. Spirit Day events also will be held at other UNMC campuses in the coming weeks. The fun events show appreciation for all UNMC employees, faculty, and staff. Also, in conjunction with UNMC Spirit Day, staffers from The Olson Center for Women’s Health won the UNMC Selfie Contest with the most-liked Facebook photo. The group won a $25 gift card to Bruegger’s.

Dr. Oleynikov receives major university award
University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken has announced the 2014 winners of the university’s most prestigious awards for teaching, research and engagement, and UNMC’s Dmitry Oleynikov, M.D., is a recipient of the Innovation, Development and Engagement Award (IDEA).

181 UNMC physicians make Best Doctors list
A total of 181 UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center physicians have been recognized on this year’s list of Best Doctors in America®. The doctors include private practice physicians as well as full and part-time faculty at UNMC who are also affiliated with UNMC Physicians, the UNMC faculty physician group.

Trees in Nebraska are pollinating in full swing this month. Grass pollen tends to begin in May or June. And ragweed will be along around Aug. 15, give or take a day or two.
For many Nebraskans that means sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy and runny noses and watery eyes.

Research highlights
UNMC College of Medicine faculty received seven awards during the month of January, representing nearly $1.3 million in new funding to UNMC.
Tammy Kielian, Ph.D., pathology & microbiology, has received a National Institutes of Health award for $750,000 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Juvenile Batten disease is an autosomal recessive inherited disorder marked by progressive neurological damage ultimately leading to cognitive decline and premature death. Dr. Kielian will build on her earlier laboratory studies which suggest that aberrant glial activation in the early stages of Juvenile Batten disease may contribute to neuronal loss. She hopes to delay disease progression by targeting this activation with compounds that affect multiple pathways of aberrant glial activation in this pre-clinical trial.
