New chiller installed in central utility plant

It isn’t easy installing a 40-ton water chiller. But, employees at Davis Erection Co. made it look easy Tuesday as they moved a new water chiller into UNMC’s Central Utilities Plant via an opening in the roof. The new chiller, capable of 2,500 tons of cooling, replaces an old 1,500-ton steam-fired chiller.

Graduate student helping unravel mystery

UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology graduate student Luke Handke has started to unravel the mystery of how Staphylococcus epidermidis causes catheter-related infections, the number one cause of hospital-related infections. Handke’s findings are published in a feature article in the May issue of The Journal of Medical Microbiology.

Students and faculty spend their spring break on UNMC sponsored medical missions to Falmouth, Jamaica; Managua and Jinotepe, Nicaragua; and the Sisseton Indian Health Service facility in South Dakota.

Students cap domestic violence course with patient case

On Thursday, two UNMC medical students culminated a four-week long, elective course in domestic violence with a simulated patient case and mock criminal trial. The students are the first in the state to participate in the course.

Haven receives Chancellor’s Gold U Award

During her 34 years in the lab, Mary Haven tested household detergents, fecal fats, trace metals and more than 200 different analytes in blood and body fluids. Today, the chemist-turned-teacher-turned administrator is poised to guide UNMC’s School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP) into a national leader in distance learning. For her efforts, she has been awarded the Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award.

Aging expert to give Harman lecture on Friday

One of the world’s most-acclaimed scientists will be at UNMC on Friday, April 30, to deliver the Third Annual Denham Harman, M.D., Ph.D., Lectureship in Biomedical Gerontology. Bruce Ames, Ph.D., professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and senior research scientist at the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute, will present “A Role for Supplements in Optimizing Health and Delaying Aging: The Metabolic Tune-up.”

Bicycling Club forms at UNMC; inaugural expo May 6

The newly formed UNMC Bicycling Club is hosting its Inaugural Cycling Expo from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, at the Durham Outpatient Center West Atrium. The expo is an opportunity for employees to learn all kinds of information regarding bicycling from professionals on the subjects.
