Seven site visit consultant-evaluators from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools are on campus today and will remain until Wednesday.

Pfizer grant to fund March diabetes conference at UNO
Pfizer pharmaceuticals recently awarded the UNMC Center for Continuing Education and the Section of Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism a grant for $30,000. These educational grant funds will allow UNMC to offer an accredited continuing education conference on management of diabetes and complications on March 30 at the W.H. Thompson Alumni Center on the UNO campus.

Dr. Deupree retiring after 34 years at UNMC
For Jean Deupree, Ph.D., it’s time to slow down a bit. That’s why on Friday, Dr. Deupree, professor of pharmacology and experimental neuroscience, will retire after 34 years as a teacher and researcher at UNMC.

UNMC making in roads in early childhood development
Early childhood development is an important issue for Nebraskans as evidenced by the recent passage of Amendment 5, a ballot item calling for more money to be directed toward early childhood development in the state. Increasing its contribution to early childhood development in the state of Nebraska is a focus point in the 2006-2009 UNMC strategic plan and progress is being made in that effort, said Cynthia Ellis, M.D., director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s Department of Developmental Medicine.

Tuesday deemed day of mourning; UNMC offices will be closed
UNMC offices will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 2 in observance of a national day of mourning for former President Gerald R. Ford. Tuesday will be considered a day of (paid) administrative leave for all leave-eligible employees.

Hospital expands car safety seat screening program
Car safety seats are meant to keep children safe given that the car seat fits the child and it is used correctly each and every car ride. However, near term infants may be at risk for potential respiratory difficulties when placed in a semi-upright position in a car safety seat. The Nebraska Medical Center is the first hospital in Omaha to expand its car safety seat screening program to all near term infants.
