College of Dentistry takes dental day on the road

For the first time students, faculty and staff from the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry will travel 400 miles, bringing its free dental clinic to children in western Nebraska. More than 100 children from Alliance and Hemingford, Neb., will receive free dental treatment and education at Dental Day VI June 4 and 5 in Alliance. Many of the children are Native American or children of migrant farm workers.

UNMC cancer specialists involved in international conference

Cancer specialists from UNMC will be among more than 25,000 participants from around the world to discuss the latest advances in cancer care, treatment, and prevention at the 40th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The meeting will be at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, La., June 5 through June 8.

Results of a research study led by Wallace Thoreson, Ph.D., associate professor, UNMC Department of Ophthalmology and Department of Pharmacology, will be published in the current (May 27) issue of the journal Neuron. Dr. Thoreson’s research involves how people see.

Dr. Armitage joins international anemia research effort

James Armitage, M.D., Joe Shapiro professor of medicine and UNMC oncologist, has joined the new Roche Foundation for Anemia Research (RoFAR), a charitable organization to encourage innovative research in anemia. Researchers involved in areas associated with the study of anemia are invited to apply to RoFAR for funding.

Dr. Kabanov awarded named professorship

Alexander “Sasha” Kabanov, Ph.D., Dr.Sc., professor in the UNMC Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, has been awarded the Parke-Davis Endowed Chair in Pharmaceutics in recognition of his outstanding and innovative work in the field of drug delivery.

Heart walk benefits research, education

Through its annual heart walk, the American Heart Association (AHA) continues its fight to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Earlier this month, approximately 2,000 people participated in the ninth annual AHA Heart Walk, including teams from UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center and University Medical Associates.

Radio commercials spotlight UNMC’s education, outreach

UNMC will launch its spring series of radio commercials today in Omaha, Lincoln and select stations across Nebraska. The three commercials will focus on UNMC’s education and outreach missions by highlighting the College of Nursing’s Distance Learning Program, the College of Dentistry’s Dental Day and the GOODLIFE Clinic, which is operated by an interdisciplinary team of students.
