No card from Barney this year

In this tribute to Col. Barney Oldfield (1909-2003), longtime friend Todd Nelson keeps the Nebraska philanthropist’s spirit alive. Oldfield established the Vada Kinman Oldfield Alzheimer’s Research Fund at UNMC in 1999, in honor of his wife, who died that year after an 11-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

UNMC researchers study effect of diabetes on developing embryo

UNMC researchers have received a $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the effect of diabetes on the developing embryo. The grant, to be funded over five years, was awarded to Claudia Kappen, Ph.D., associate professor of genetics, cell biology and anatomy in UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute.

It is just such spiritual linkage that drives JoniRai Schmidt’s desire to complete an advanced medical program and use her health science skills to enhance the circle of Native American life. Schmidt graduates Friday from UNMC’s physician assistant program.

Blood drive at UNMC on Dec. 31; reserves in short supply

Several factors figure to be detrimental to the region’s blood supply this holiday season, but UNMC employees will have the opportunity to enhance the blood supply on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at the Center for Healthy Living. The campus will host a special blood drive from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The blood drive, originally scheduled to end at 11:30 a.m., was extended for two hours because of the current need for blood. Employees can sign up by clicking here or by contacting the Center for Healthy Living at 559-5254.

Longtime UNMC preceptor Hiram Walker dies

From his Kearney office, Hiram Walker, M.D., assisted in the education of hundreds of UNMC medical students. The longtime UNMC preceptor died Saturday at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He was 78. Services for Dr. Walker are Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney.
