Regents to consider program statement for educational vision

UNMC is proposing to construct the Center for Health Science Education Building. The University of Nebraska Board of Regents will consider a program statement for the new building at its meeting on Saturday, Dec. 13. No state tax dollars will be used for construction of the building.

Dec. 26 deemed holiday; UNMC offices will be closed

Gov. Mike Johanns announced Thursday that all Nebraska state government agencies will close on Dec. 26, in conjunction with President Bush’s federal government closing order. In order to implement the governor’s order at UNMC, Dec. 26 will be considered as a day of (paid) administrative leave for all holiday-eligible employees, and UNMC offices will be closed in observance of the governor’s directive.

Sutton earns Chancellor’s Gold U Award

For the past several years, Cindy Sutton has been the “heart and soul” of UNMC’s efforts in the American Heart Association Heart walk. In 2002, she helped UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, become the leading corporate fundraiser, raising more than $30,000 to help fight disease and stroke. Last year, she again volunteered to lead UNMC’s efforts, completing the walk wheeling her 8-month-old twins in their stroller.

Manual Quick Check purchase orders to end Jan. 1

The manually created QM purchase orders will be discontinued effective Jan. 1, 2004. Department users can still create QM purchase orders in SAP and, if access to SAP is not available, the Purchasing Card could be used and would meet most needs. Number of student applicants to UNMC increases significantly

The number of students who applied to enter UNMC educational programs in 2003 was 3,447, more than 600 more students than applied to become a student at UNMC in 2001. Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., says the increased numbers show that UNMC has become more prominent to students over the past few years.

UNMC to conduct national study on breast cancer vaccine

UNMC has received a two-year, $500,000 grant to conduct a clinical breast cancer study to test the safety and effectiveness of a vaccine in combination with surgery and chemotherapy. The funding was awarded by Avon and the U.S. National Cancer Institute Progress for Patients Program. UNMC researchers expect to begin enrolling patients in January.

Volunteers donate time, energy to showcase UNMC

Several years ago, Ruth Cain opened the newspaper and saw an article calling for UNMC docents, or volunteers. “Why not give it a whirl?” she thought. Now, nearly five years later, Cain continues to escort students, community leaders and VIPs around the UNMC campus. “I love the atmosphere of a medical center – it’s all I’ve ever known,” said the retired medical technologist. In 2002, they volunteered 257 hours to escort nearly 2,000 individuals — ranging from elementary students to political leaders.
