UNMC physician strives to improve end-of-life care in Nebraska

Ed Vandenberg, M.D., is on a mission to improve end-of-life care in Nebraska. As president of the Nebraska Medical Directors Association (NMDA), a group of physicians who direct care in nursing homes, Dr. Vandenberg feels he is in a unique position to make a difference.

Proposal for acquisition of Atomic Force Microscope

The nanomedicine group at UNMC will submit a proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF) to purchase an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). This instrument is unique for Omaha and will be instrumental for characterization of nanoparticles and other nano-sized molecular structures. If you would like to use this instrument and be included in the proposal, contact Dr. Tatiana Bronich (tbronich@unmc.edu at 559-9915) no later than Dec. 15.

World AIDS Day annual call to arms against global disease

The numbers are mind-boggling — 21.8 million people have died from AIDS since the disease was first identified in 1980. Today, in recognition of World AIDS Day, the world pauses to reflect on the scope of the disease and its human cost, as well as to honor the on-going heroic struggles waged to stem the tide.

University of Southern California selected as Homeland Security center

The University of Southern California was selected Tuesday as the Department of Homeland Security’s first university-based center for research. The University of Nebraska was one of the four finalists for the center, officially called the DHS Center of Excellence for Risk Analysis and Modeling Related to the Economic Consequences of Terrorism.

Weber receives Chancellor’s Gold U Award

By day, Annika Weber studies serum amyloid A proteins in a UNMC immunology lab. By night, she sews costumes for Opera Omaha. For her outstanding performance at UNMC, Weber has received the Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award for November.

Grant provides Nebraska nurses access to master’s degree

The UNMC College of Nursing has received a two-year, $580,000 continuation grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to recruit more rural nurses into a master’s degree that prepares nurses as leaders.
