UNMC, Douglas County Attorney’s Office unite in L.E.A.D.
UNMC is collaborating with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office (DCA), the Omaha medical community and First National Bank to develop a nationally acclaimed youth education program in Omaha. First started in California, the “Legal Enrichment and Decision Making” (LEAD) project is directed toward preventive education in health and legal issues for middle school children.

Honorary degree recipient to give May 12 lecture
UNMC has selected Linda Cronenwett, Ph.D., professor and dean of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing, to receive a 2005 Honorary Doctor of Science degree. During her visit, Dr. Cronenwett will present a lecture titled, “Nursing’s Contributions to Healthcare Quality: Raising the Bar,” on Thursday, May 12.

MMI’s Arts for Hearts show, silent auction May 11-12
The Fourth Annual Arts for Hearts Show and Silent Auction on May 11-12 will benefit Munroe-Meyer Institute’s Recreation Therapy Program (MMIRTP). The show features works created by children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities who participate in various MMIRTP programs, along with local professional artists.

Cystic fibrosis walk is May 21
The Nebraska Medical Center/UNMC Cystic Fibrosis team is recruiting walkers for the GREAT STRIDES Walk on Saturday, May 21, at Chalco Hills, Wehrspann Lake, Visitor’s Center. The Nebraska Regional Cystic Fibrosis Center at UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center is the only center of its kind in the region.

Integrative and organ systems pharmacology course June 6-17
A UNMC-led consortium has landed one of four National Institutes of Health grants to present a short course in Integrative and Organ Systems Pharmacology (IOSP). These short courses are designed to train researchers in the use of intact animals and relatively intact isolated organs or tissues.

Researchers evaluate treatment for lung disease
Researchers at UNMC are conducting a study to evaluate a new treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a debilitating and deadly lung disease. UNMC is one of 75 leading medical centers in North America and Europe participating in a phase III clinical trial that tests the potential of interferon gamma-1b.
