Researchers meet children, families affected by cancer
Researchers don’t always have the opportunity to meet those they are trying to help. Instead, they are busy in the laboratory studying cancer, writing papers and applying for grants. But recently, UNMC cancer researchers met a dozen children and adults affected by leukemia or lymphoma.

Fry assumes role of director of governmental relations
In her position as director of governmental relations, Renee Fry wants to introduce UNMC researchers to federal opportunities for non-peer-reviewed research funding. Before she can do that, however, Fry needs to introduce herself to those same medical scientists. That’s why she’s spent much of her first few weeks on campus in meetings with those researchers.

Michael and Lesley Leach are two people who take togetherness to a whole new level. The couple raised three children, worked outside jobs and still managed to fulfill their dream of graduating from nursing school at the same time.

UNMC nursing dean in national video
Johnson & Johnson is preparing to launch a promotional video, “Nurse Scientists: Committed to the Public Trust,” that will feature Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing, and nine other nurse researchers from across the country. The 10-minute video promotes nursing research to meet the healthcare needs of the nation.

Memorial service today for Maureen Cleary
Memorial services are today for Maureen “Mo” Cleary, a former alumni director at UNMC. Cleary died Dec. 29 at her home in Estes Park, Colo., of complications from breast cancer, which was diagnosed in 2002. She was 53.

Music eases pain, anxiety after open-heart surgery
Researchers have found a potential way to reduce moderate to severe pain, and anxiety following open-heart surgery. It may be as simple as listening to music. A research team led by a UNMC College of Nursing doctoral student published the study in the November issue of Pain.
