UNMC professor receives CGEA’s Medical Education Laureate Award

The Association of American Medical College’s Central Group on Educational Affairs recently awarded Fred McCurdy, M.D., Ph.D., associate chair for pediatric education in UNMC’s department of pediatrics, with its 2002 Medical Education Laureate. The award recognizes individuals who have made long-standing, substantive contributions to medical education and contributed significantly to the growth and development of the organization.

New e-mail address for sending Thank ‘U’ Rewards

Due to the success of UNMC’s Thank ‘U’ Reward program, Human Resource has developed an e-mail account dedicated to the program. Beginning today, requests to send a Thank ‘U’ Reward should be made to thanku@unmc.edu. The dedicated e-mail address will enable several individuals in Human Resources to access the account and expedite processing of the awards.

Tornado Awareness Week April 1-5, mock drills April 3

April 1-5 is Tornado Awareness Week. On Wednesday, April 3, UNMC will be participating in a statewide tornado awareness exercise. The exercise will consist of a mock tornado watch at 10:30 a.m., followed by a mock tornado warning at 10:40 a.m. The exercise will not be held if severe weather is in the area. (The backup date is Thursday, April 4).

Study examines home-based cardiac rehabilitation vs. traditional cardiac rehab

Researchers at the UNMC College of Nursing have received a $100,000 grant from the American Heart Association to conduct a preliminary study to determine whether home-based cardiac rehabilitation is an effective alternative to traditional cardiac rehabilitation.

UNMC researchers will study 50 Omaha-area study participants, age 40- to 80-years-old, who have had a heart attack or coronary artery bypass. The clinical site for the study will be Nebraska Health System (NHS).

College of Dentistry to provide free dental care to 185 underserved children

UNMC’s College of Dentistry will host Children’s Dental Day Monday, April 8. The day-long event will provide 185 children from Lincoln, Beatrice, Grand Island and Harvard, a day of free dental screening, diagnosis, care and education.

Cultural competency in serving the deaf has come a long way

When Janet Killam presents Tuesday’s Lunch ‘n Learn, the audience won’t hear a single word. Killam, a field representative for the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, is deaf and will make her presentation using sign language.

Fortunately for the audience, Killam’s colleague, Judy Gouldsmith, will orally interpret her message. Gouldsmith, an interpreter/program assistant in the commission’s Omaha office, will discuss key issues in providing medical services to the deaf.

UNMC to honor 30-year service award recipients — part 3 of 3

Five UNMC faculty members will be receiving 30-year service awards during the Annual Faculty meeting Thursday, April 11 at 4 p.m. in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. UNMC Today highlights the final three award recipients today with a look at Terry Hexum, Ph.D. and Anne Kessinger, M.D., of the College of Medicine, and Parviz Pour, M.D., of the Eppley Institute for Cancer Research.

Nebraska leads the nation when it comes to the number of critical access hospitals — designated hospitals that receive federal funds to strengthen rural health.
