NHS wants to help movie fans separate fact from fiction in the Denzel Washington movie, “John Q.” The movie, which opens in theaters Feb. 15, tells the fictional story of a boy in need of a heart transplant.

Col. Oldfield’s UNMC donation in memory of service women

In memory of Lt. Col. Charity Earley and all women who served in the military during World War II, Col. A. Barney Oldfield USAF (ret.) has donated $500 to the Vada Kinman Oldfield Alzheimer’s Research Fund at UNMC.

In anticipation of the Presidents Day national holiday on Feb. 18, UNMC Today will feature the words and images of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The six-part series kicks off today with Lincoln’s thoughts on preserving liberty.

Gene therapy method in mice could boost effectiveness of stem cell transplants

A study by a UNMC researcher has shown that gene therapy can kill tumor cells that otherwise are returned to cancer patients following high-dose chemotherapy, while keeping the good cells intact.

In a report published in December in Cancer Gene Therapy, James Talmadge, Ph.D., announced that his group was able to purge tumor cells without affecting the stem cells needed to make the high-dose chemotherapy patient healthy again.

The 2002 UNMC/NHS celebration of national Black History Awareness Month will feature a return engagement by jazz musician Preston Love. In addition, there will be an art exhibit in the McGoogan Library, a presentation on minority health disparities and a soul food day in the Nebraska Cafe. (See story for details).

Chinese Lunar New Year Party Feb. 16 on campus

You are invited to a new year’s party – Chinese style. The 2002 Chinese Lunar New Year Party will be Saturday, Feb. 16, from 6 to 11 p.m. at the UNMC Student Life Center, 3908 Jones St. The event is co-sponsored by the UNMC International Studies and Programs, Chinese Student and Scholar Associations at UNMC, University of Nebraska at Omaha and Creighton University, and the Omaha Chinese Professional Association.
