Dr. Booth finds rewards in teaching
When James Booth, Ph.D., was offered a teaching assistant position upon beginning his doctoral education, he was terrified at the thought of presenting lectures in front of a classroom of students. More than three decades and hundreds of lectures later, Dr. Booth is being honored with the UNMC Outstanding Teaching Award. This is the second in a three-part series on UNMC’s outstanding teachers.

Free tax preparation assistance offered to UNMC employees
Sid Magdanz is once again offering free tax preparation assistance to UNMC employees who have questions regarding their 2002 tax returns. Magdanz is available to assist UNMC employees every Tuesday through April 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Administration Center, Room 2032.

Clinical psychologist cultivates minds
Keith Allen, Ph.D., isn’t likely to give the pre-doctoral interns that he mentors a lot of answers when discussing intervention strategies for patients. Instead, the UNMC clinical psychologist seeks to cultivate the future psychologists’ minds with in-depth dialogue and thought about why specific treatments are effective. This is the first of a three-part series featuring this year’s Outstanding Teachers.

Nebraska groups seek to protect NU from further cuts
UNMC’s faculty and student senates are among the wide array of Nebraska organizations that have adopted resolutions asking that the University of Nebraska be considered a high priority for funding as the Legislature moves toward completion of the budget for the 2003-2005 biennium. Faculty to be recognized for service at annual meeting
Almost 40 faculty members who have served 10, 20 or 30 years at UNMC will be recognized at the Annual Faculty Meeting on Monday, March 31, at 4 p.m. in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. More than 40 faculty who have served five years will receive a certificate via mail and will be recognized in the annual meeting program. A reception, hosted by UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., will follow the meeting at approximately 5 p.m. in the private dining rooms. See story for complete list of faculty who have served five, 10, 20 or 30 years.

Vetter receives Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award for March
Deb Vetter and her staff review approximately 700 grants and contracts per year, of which approximately 400 are awarded. Vetter admits it’s a high-stress, detail-oriented task, but one she finds rewarding and challenging as director of UNMC’s Sponsored Programs.
