James Lane, M.D., assistant professor in the diabetes, endocrinology & metabolism section of the internal medicine department, is serving as president of the Heartland Chapter of the American Diabetes Association.

Morien assumes additional campus post
Marsha Morien has been named administrative director of the University of Nebraska’s Center for Biosecurity. She will continue to serve as administrator of computer assisted medicine and surgery, a post she’s held at UNMC since 1999.

Developing talent, building careers internally
For the past 20 years, Ernest Tanner has served as inventory clerk auditor. Now, bolstered by UNMC’s new career development program, the longtime employee is looking forward to a new career.
Tanner, who plans to attend physical therapy assistant courses in the future, recently completed UNMC’s Foundations for Success program. The program helps employees hone their personal and career development skills.

Moving from microscopes to computers, virtual slides
In the past, Ann Ngo and Melissa St. Germain would move slides of cellular structures under a microscope. Now, the first-year medical students are studying virtual images using a computer screen.
Professors in UNMC’s department of genetics, cell biology and anatomy are exploring the possibility of replacing aging student microscopes and slide collections with flat computer screens which allow students to view cell structures with the click of a mouse.

NHS/UNMC host city-wide Chinese New Year’s Celebration Feb. 8
The 2003 Chinese New Year’s celebration – Year of the Goat – will be Saturday, Feb. 8, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., at the Lower Storz Pavilion of NHS Clarkson Hospital. Advanced tickets are $6 adult, $4 student, $2 for children under 12. Tickets purchased at the door will be $1 more. See story for details.

Search begins for genetics, cell biology, anatomy chairperson
UNMC has begun a national search for a permanent chairperson of the department of genetics, cell biology and anatomy. William Berndt, Ph.D., interim chairman of the department of pharmacology, will lead the 11-member search committee.

Traditional African music, dance fills Wittson Hall
Using his palms, fingertips and the heels of his hand, Seku Neblett pounded the rhythms of his ancestors on the d’jembe and bougurabo. Meanwhile, Charles Ahovissi, a professional dancer from Benin, West Africa, danced around the African drums in brilliant colored costumes.
