Describe your research in laymen’s terms.
My research aims to explore the mechanisms by which HIV infection and drugs of abuse, such as cocaine and morphine, inflict synergistic damage to the central nervous system.
How does your research contribute to science and/or health care?
The long term goal of research in my laboratory is to pave the way for development of therapeutic strategies that could ultimately reverse the neuropathology observed in HIV-infected drug abusers.
Name someone at UNMC who provides vital contributions to your success and briefly describe how they help you.
I owe my success to not one but each and every person I interact with — my research team with whom I exchange ideas regularly, my chair and my colleagues who provide a stimulating environment and, last but certainly not the least, the administrators for keeping the place running smoothly.
List three things few people know about you.
- I am passionate about mentoring students and post-docs. It helps me feel youthful.
- I find yoga a good antidote to the news of a rejected mansucript and/or grant. I highly recommend it!
- I used to be extremely shy and introverted … goes to show people CAN change.
