MITS honors student with rededication

Earlier this month, the UNMC Department of Medical Imaging and Therapeutic Sciences (MITS) held a rededication of a memorial honoring student Dawn Lisec.

The department had planted a tree and placed a plaque in 1994 in honor of Lisec, who graduated from the radiography program that year and had just begun the diagnostic medical sonography program when she suffered an asthma attack and then died on the way to the emergency room at Methodist Hospital.

The tree stands in the courtyard between Wittson Hall and the hospital, but the plaque had disappeared a few months ago. James Temme, associate director of MITS, organized the rededication of the tree with a new plaque.

“It was a special day to honor a special student,” Temme said.

Members of the Lisec family, former students and faculty joined Temme and his wife, Kathy, to celebrate and remember Lisec. Some of her classmates even came from out of town.

“Dawn’s family really appreciated this event,” Temme said. “They couldn’t believe that we would remember her after 22 years. Dawn was a great example of an ideal student. She excelled in her academics and was outstanding in the clinic. The patients loved her, and we won’t forget.”
