Lookin’ at U: Julie Garfield

Julie Garfield, left, with jazz musician Brian Culbertson in 2015

Each Thursday, we randomly feature a medical center employee.

This week, we learn more about:

  • Name: Julie Garfield
  • Hometown: Macomb, Ill.
  • Number of years at UNMC: 10 years

Tell us a bit about what you do here at UNMC.

I am the business manager for public relations. I manage all things financial and am the administrative support for our director, Bill O’Neill.

Teamwork is one of UNMC’s brand values. Tell us of a time you witnessed a person or group demonstrating teamwork at UNMC.

“Other duties as assigned” is the motto of public relations. At any event look for all the PR staff to be carrying chairs, directing traffic, escorting guests, driving someone to their hotel and a host of other small, unnoticed efforts that make events run like clockwork.

What is your favorite fall activity?

I enjoy watching the Huskers football games, and I love biking when the weather turns cooler.

List three things people may not know about you.

  • I often travel to see smooth jazz artists David Benoit, Brian Culbertson and Chris Botti in concert. This has resulted in a large collection of autographed CDs and pictures with the artists.
  • My cousin and I were held in custody by the Secret Service in the basement of the U.S. Capitol building.
  • Senior associate director of public relations (and persistent nickname bestower) Tom O’Connor calls me CW, for Cat Woman, because I have a Siamese cat and my last name is Garfield.
