The med center is reimagining what health care might look like in the future, and it's starting with a blank slate.

Planning is underway for the new innovation design unit, an inpatient unit that will be housed on level six of University Tower at the Nebraska Medical Center. Demolition has been completed. Now, the design phase can begin.

Demolition work has been completed in the innovation design unit space on level six of University Tower at the Nebraska Medical Center.

When complete, the unit will include 18 to 24 inpatient beds and will be an environment to pilot new care delivery, technology and facility design. It also will support the med center's role in preparedness and hazard response, leading up to Project NExT. The goal is for patients to be seen in the unit by fiscal year 2024.

A team is beginning work on the conceptual design of the innovation design unit. It’s looking for insight into how innovation currently happens at Nebraska Medicine and UNMC and how to encourage even more innovation. All colleagues, faculty and students are invited to participate in a short survey.

Take the innovation survey. It will remain open through Friday, Dec. 24.

More information about the unit — and opportunities to participate in its planning — will be communicated in the months ahead.
