Juneteenth to be observed as floating holiday

Effective this year, the University of Nebraska System will observe Juneteenth as a floating holiday.

Juneteenth, which is June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It was declared a federal holiday in 2021 by President Biden.

The university will be open on Monday, June 20, and the annual holiday closedown will be extended by one day. Eligible employees wishing to take June 20 off may do so using the regular leave process.

The university system observes a number of federal holidays during the holiday closedown, including Veterans Day and President’s Day. It is the university’s intent to observe any additional new federal or state holidays as floating holidays.

NU’s complete holiday closedown schedule, updated through 2025, is available here.
